About Laughing Bird
The “Laughing Bird Studio” emerged from the rolled up drawings and prints which were ever increasing a few years back now, in a grown up backpack.
A move to the incredibly beautiful habitat of the Blue Mountains in 2006, and a permanent studio space for an increasing number of silk screens provided the perfect location to settle down and start the first hand printed wild flower inspired print collection.
In studio Freedom Wilson maneuvers between printed and drawn artwork for exhibition, art projects, and our “Laughing Bird” screen printed textiles range, and designing and custom printing for a fun and thought provoking group of clients.
A love of bush walking and our wild Australian natural heritage are forever inspiring up here in the Blue Mountains. At work we are entertained by rosella’s, kookaburra’s, bower birds and in summer time blue tongue lizards and the occasional tiger snake. Its pretty cool… The National park is literally on our doorstep.
Mostly each “Laughing Bird” design is hand drawn and painted before being printed using traditional artisan screen printing methods, with inspiration manifesting on bush walks.
Actually perhaps it all started as a child of the 1980’s with a blank t-shirt, homemade stamps to print, a packet of buttons, some ribbon meterage and a plastic tube of florescent orange puff paint from the local habedashery store. A life long addiction to print, paper, drawing and raw fabric had begun, there was not to be a backward glance.
As life became more serious Freedom studied Textile design at Melbourne’s R.M.I.T, followed by an an MA in Printmaking at C.O.F.A.
A very inspiring two years were spent working for “Australian Volunteer’s International” in Swaziland teaching various art and textile applications at a trade school for young women, and being enchanted by the immediacy and romanticism of African art and textile culture’s.
Central Australia called, and Freedom worked in Art Centre admin with the indigenous painting community at Haasts Bluff. It was a privilige to to spend time living, working and sketching within the community in such an isolated and beautiful natural environment.
But today from our Blue Mountains studio we enjoy a good old layering of prints to represent the plethora and diversity of natvie wildflowers and creatures. “Laughing Bird” screen printed fabrics are stitched locally.
Our favourite fabrics are heavy duty and natural. Linen and hemp are some of the worlds oldest, and our considerable experimentation draws conclusive evidence that they are the longest lasting and most durable, as well as continuously looking and feeling amazing.
It’s is all made possible too, from a very wonderful and supportive family.
We love the entire process. Hope you like the results!
At the “Laughing Bird studio” we print to order. Each order takes about two weeks to print up, make up and send off. If you require your order urgently please let us know.
Because we love this planet we use’s solvent free pigments and dyes on natural fabrics made to last.
We minimize all packaging and waste. We recycle and when ever possible and eat vegetarian food grown in our vegetable garden for lunch.
